How a lawn care franchise works

What franchising is, and how it works in the lawn care industry

About Franchising

Franchising is a business model where an independent business owner can run their own local business with all of the support, marketing power and reputation of a national brand.

When you join a franchise, you get assigned an area within which you, and you alone, are licensed to trade (this is known as the franchise territory). Franchisees usually pay an up-front joining fee, which covers all of the training, marketing and equipment needed to start the business. After that, each franchisee contributes a small percentage of their earnings every month to head office.

Franchising works well for local businesses that would benefit from the support of a national network. So with Lawnkeeper, for instance, our franchisees buy materials, equipment and advertising centrally, at group discount rates that no independent sole trader could ever achieve. Every Lawnkeeper franchisee still maintains 100% ownership of their business, and reaps the benefits of the work they put in.

BFA Membership: what it is and what it means

In the UK today, there are literally thousands of franchisees in operation. Just like any commercial enterprise, there are risks involved in starting a franchised business, so it’s important that our industry is regulated in a fair and open way.

For the past 40 years, the British Franchise Association (bfa) has been the voluntary self-regulatory body for the UK franchise sector. Its focus is on promoting ethical franchising in the UK, through codes of practice, qualifications and national awards.

As bfa members, we adhere to a strict code of practice and uphold the highest ethical standards in how we run our franchise network. Membership gives us access to the latest industry research, educational tools and a dispute resolution mechanism which, thankfully, we have never needed to use. For us, bfa membership is another step in our never-ending mission to offer the very best lawn care franchise in the country.

Lawnkeeper have been franchising for 10 years

Lawnkeeper has been in business for more than 20 years, but we’ve run our business as a franchise since 2007. We’ve grown slowly and carefully since then, and we’re proud to say that all of our franchisees make good money with our tried-and-tested business model. Our systems have improved to the extent that new franchisees can earn £45,000 in their first year of trade.

We’re recruiting new franchisees in a number of territories this year, and we’re keen to speak to anyone who might be interested. Full details on the Lawnkeeper opportunity are available in our prospectus, which we are more than happy to send you.
