Professional Lawn Scarification Services

What is Scarification?

Scarification is the process of removing or reducing thatch and moss from a lawn by using a specialist machine called a scarifier. When thatch or moss are rife within your lawn, the risk of fungal lawn disease increases dramatically, so it’s important to keep thatch and moss levels to a minimum.

Benefits of lawn scarification

  • Increased disease tolerance
  • Increased water, nutrient and oxygen movement into the soil
  • Improved rooting
  • Enhanced infiltration of rainfall or irrigation
  • Helps prevent fertiliser and pesticide run-off from 'spongy' lawns
  • Controls thatch
  • Reduces the amount of moss in the lawn

How does scarification work?

Scarification works by scraping thin metal blades through the top surface of your lawn, tearing out the moss and thatch that has built up between each blade of grass without tearing the grass out at the same time. It is usually handled with specialist scarifying machinery but may also be finished off manually with a scarification rake. At Lawnkeeper, we maintain a fleet of professional scarification machines for this very purpose.

When to scarify the lawn

Scarification strips a lot of growth from your lawn, so your garden will look worse for wear for a few weeks after treatment. It’s important to note that a small amount of thatch in your lawn is harmless, and very light moss infestation can be taken care of with a moss control treatment. If in doubt about whether to get your lawn scarified, the best thing to do is to book a free lawn analysis. A qualified Lawnkeeper technician will visit you and take a soil sample to help us determine whether your lawn would benefit from scarification.
